1) Introduction:

The Takt: Op. Project consists of a Computer Game, and a TV series. The relationships between the Game and the Anime are difficult to understand.

As far as we can tell there are only a few crossover characters in both the Game and the Anime. Takt Asahina (朝雛タクト, Asahina Takuto), Destiny (運命, Unmei), and Valkyrie (Walküre) (ワルキューレ, Warukyūre) are in both the Game and the Anime. But Destiny in the Anime appears to be a teenager whose Musicart occupies the body of a human girl, Cosette Schneider (コゼット・シュナイダー, Kozetto Shunaidā) where in the Game, Destiny appears to be a 20+ year old fully endowed woman.

There is the possibility that the Anime is being made to sell the Game much in the way that the “Houseki no Kuni” Anime sold the Manga.

Beyond this point, we will no longer talk about the Game, but only the Anime currently streaming on Crunchyroll. Some fans call the Anime a 12 Episode story but there has been no announcement of when the Anime will end, so it’s anyone’s guess.


2) The Fight in Las Vegas:

Because 5 is V in Latin numbers, The 5th has also been called the Victory Symphony, and of course the V hand sign is very common in Anime as Titan shows in this clip.

Titan is so incredibly cute! And her explanation to Destiny on how to do it, is simply spot on!

Still in Las Vegas, Destiny senses D2’s and they are in/under the Casino. The Casino Fight: Classic and Beautiful. We begin to see the power of The Victory Symphony!

3) An important linguistic clarification:

The Germans call the 5th, “Beethovens 5. Sinfonie wird auch Schicksalssinfonie genannt”. This title uses the German word Schicksal which can translate into English as either Fate or Destiny.

The Japanese use the word 運命 (Unmei) which also can translate into English as either Fate or Destiny.

Jisho.org: Japanese Dictionary gives the following breakdown of the Kanji, 運 = {carry, luck, destiny, fate, lot, transport, progress, advance} and 命 = {fate, command, decree, destiny, life, appoint}

Generally in English Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is nicknamed Destiny and sometimes Victory

Neither the Japanese nor the German languages make a distinction between the senses of the word in the way that English does. This is a definite cultural issue. Many English dictionaries in fact do not make a distinction between the two English words as to sense, seeing this relationship as literally Fate = Destiny!

To clarify this problem, will require a little deep dive, but please stay with us here, because the distinction is ultimately of the highest priority.

EN: Fate comes from the OF: fate which comes from the ancient Latin L: fata “things spoken by the gods” which ultimately comes from the ancient Indo-European root AE: *bha, “to speak”.

“Destiny” has an entirely different backstory. EN: Destiny comes from OF: destinee which also sources the EN: destination and the OF: destinee comes from ancient Latin as L: destinare “make firm, establish”. The sense of this progression is “to aim at, fix in your mind” or “design, intention, planning”

Because Fate is decreed by God or the gods, it is fixed and immutable. No one can avoid his or her Fate. For the ancient Greeks, the Fates spun their threads of life for all individuals, and there was no escape from the consequences. In Asian cultures, anime fans are well aware of the Red String of Fate which binds two lovers together. The movie “Your Name.” makes marvelous use of this concept where Mitsuha Miyamizu (宮水 三葉, Miyamizu Mitsuha) actually wears the string in her hair, and gives it to Taki Tachibana (立花 瀧, Tachibana Taki) who keeps it on his wrist for three years. In modern Scientific jargon, this would be called Determinism, where everything that happens in the world, is bound by absolute cause and effect.

But modern Scientific thinking has moved away from this chain of causation type of thinking. The artist behind Your Name., Makoto Shinkai, adopted this new viewpoint, and in his story he deconstructs and then subverts the concepts of Fate, and its Red String, by introducing Quantum effects, and The Many Worlds interpretation. The future is not fixed and immutable, but can be changed, and in the story, it IS changed by the efforts of Taki Tachibana (立花 瀧, Tachibana Taki) and Mitsuha Miyamizu (宮水 三葉, Miyamizu Mitsuha). This approach is properly called “Destiny”, the destination that one aims for in life. “Destiny” is the breaking of the chains of dependent origination by the Will of the individuals involved.

Another anime where this is done is the recent, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train (劇場版「鬼滅の刃」 無限列車編, Gekijō-ban “Kimetsu no Yaiba” Mugen Ressha-hen)

The Flame Hashira Kyōjurō Rengoku (煉獄 杏寿郎, Rengoku Kyōjurō) must face in a fight to the death, the Demon Akaza, Upper Moon Three (猗窩座). During this fight, Kyōjurō realizes that Akaza is too fast for him. In the story, the only way to stop a demon is to cut off his or her head with a special sword. Kyōjurō chooses to die by allowing the Demon to punch through his abdomen but this locks Akaza to Kyojuro’s body, and now Kyojuro is able to slowly cut off the Demon’s head. But Inosuke Hashibira (嘴平 伊之助, Hashibira Inosuke) foolishly does not understand what Kyojuro is doing, and he rushes over, and cuts off the arms of the Demon, releashing him from the trap. The Demon escapes, and Kyojuro dies. But the point here is that this is not Fate. The result is the choice made by Kyojuro and Inosuke which locks the result. This is Destiny, the results of strategy, the Planning for a certain result, the aim to which one directs him or her self.

One drives to their destination in the vehicle of their own choices.


4) Fan Reaction

Many Anime fans are decidedly trolling Takt: Op. and rejecting it for it’s lack of realism which is a decidedly curious criticism in an Art Form where gods, spirits, demons are a standard item, and where anime characters sweat from their hair when they are nervous.

The Kaguya-sama gang destroyed an entire High School with a Red Balloon, and I have never heard of any criticism in that respect.

It seems that fans want “Takt: Op. Destiny” to be serious, realistic, drama when in fact it plays as comedy.

Do these hard-core realists insist that when the comedian comes on stage with a rubber chicken, that it ought to be a “real” Chicken? Shakespeare long ago showed that while deep, in heart rending, tear-jerking tragedy, when the angst is total, and emotions rolling over stones, that one could in fact crack some hilarious jokes. Having slept the night in Ophelia’s grave, I understand the Comedy within the Tragedy. Something the Greeks could never quite do.

Come on guys, Destiny crashing through walls is funny, its a shtick! An ongoing, recurring comedic motif. It’s the rubber chicken all over again.

Also the character Hell (地獄, Jigoku) (on wheels no less) is an obvious joke! “Hell on Wheels” and on a train no less.

Tough, wild, mean. This expression dates from the mid-1800s, especially during the 1860s construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. As the track was extended into virtual wilderness, freight cars moving forward as track was laid transported a town. It consisted of tents occupied by the construction workers, liquor dealers, gamblers, prostitutes, and other camp followers of a rough and unsavory nature. Hence the town was called “hell on wheels.” Later the term was adapted for any individual or organization considered very aggressive, as in “On Monday mornings my boss is hell on wheels.” It also has been used admiringly, as in “Don’t underestimate her; she’s hell on wheels for getting things done.”

5) Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys?

At this point EP 6, the plot cards are being held close to the vest, and nothing has been disclosed, but in virtually every episode, there have been hints that something isn’t quite right in the Symphonica. Lenny seems to know something, but intentionally did not tell Takt, to Titan’s surprise.

But this is not unusual for Anime. After all “Puella Magi Madoka Magica (魔法少女まどか☆マギカ, Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika), also known simply as Madoka Magica, (2011, S1, 12 Eps), held its full plot until the very last EP12, and rocked the Anime world.

The producers of “Takt: op.” have never disclosed how many episodes will comprise a full S1, so a slow disclosure of any plot is not at this point, a negative. We do not understand fans who must have the full plot and all the protags and antags disclosed in Episode 1 of an Anime. Plot isn’t everything after all, unless you are an ancient Greek.

Ep 6,”Sunrise -Rooster-” the visit to New Orleans, was incredibly beautiful, and a D2 only showed up in Takt’s nightmare.

What we received was the importance of music, all kinds of music, to the human spirit, and how sound possesses magic to open hearts. The feels touched everything in EP6.


6) Will we see a final battle between Destiny (運命, Unmei) VS Hell (地獄, Jigoku) ???

The reason why this is an interesting question is that in this story the Musicarts are the Incarnations of the music itself. Destiny is literally the music of “The Symphony in C Minor No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven” which is it’s official name. Critics and fans have come to call the work following the German as “Schicksals-Sinfonie” ( The Fate Symphony), and the famous five bar theme was called the “Schicksals-Motiv” (Fate Motif). As discussed above, “Fate” and “Destiny” as names did not originate with Beethoven himself but rather from his fan and biographer Anton Schindler whose full name is Anton Felix Schindler. The character, Felix Schindler (シントラー, Shintorā) in the Anime uses Hell as his personal body-guard. As of this writing, it is not known if the Schindler character is protagonist or antagonist, I.e Good or Evil. It is believed by some music historians, that the historical Schindler was not evil, but instead appears to have been very anxious to attach his name to all things Beethoven, and is instead not considered historically reliable.

In the Anime, Felix Schindler (シントラー, Shintorā) is portrayed as totally self-absorbed, and highly arrogant which leads one to think “Antagonist”, but that could be plot misdirection. Many males like this turn out to be on the Good Side of things. But if he is evil, then he will come after Takt using all the powers of Hell. Of course Destiny will come to Takt’s defense.

Felix Schindler (シントラー, Shintorā) and his Musicart, Hell (地獄, Jigoku), are both intensely insane characters, and as such, are rather comical, but still deadly!

The Fate symphony is a nickname, and did not originate with Beethoven. That name has been carried over into English, although Destiny is the more favored English name.

I belabor this point because if war breaks out between Schindler and Takt in the Anime, Hell and Destiny will almost certainly end up fighting each other. I would match Beethoven’s 5th against all the forces of Hell. Destiny who is the incarnation of the 5th has yet to fully come into her power in the Anime.

And so, this is where we are at the end of EP 6.
